Grail Games announces new edition of Reiner Knizia’s classic Medici board game
First printing of this award-winning game in ten years
to feature stunning new artwork by Vincent Dutrait.
Sydney, Australia – Friday, September 18th, 2015. Today, Grail Games announced that it will be publishing a new English language edition of Medici. This classic auction game has been out of print since 2006. The Grail Games edition is due to be released in Q2 2016.
Designed by Dr Reiner Knizia (Tigris & Euphrates, Samurai, Ra, etc.), Medici was first published in 1995. This new edition will feature artwork by Vincent Dutrait (Rise of Augustus, Lewis & Clark, Broom Service, etc.)
Medici is part of the so-called “Knizia auction trilogy” (including his other games Ra and Modern Art), and remains one of the most highly regarded board games of the 1990s. After its original release, Medici was named on the 1995 Spiel des Jahres recommended list and it continues to be a much-loved game worldwide. The new Grail Games edition will include rules and component additions that allow Medici to be played by two players for the first time.
“Celebrating my 30 year anniversary, I am very excited to announce that Medici will once again be made available to board game enthusiasts,” said famed game designer Reiner Knizia. “The new artwork and expanded rules will do nothing but add to the gaming experience Medici provides. It is one of my favourite games and I am glad to see it back.”
The new English edition of Medici will be adorned with stunning illustrations by award-winning artist Vincent Dutrait. “To be asked to illustrate this classic game was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse,” he said. “The art I have completed thus far includes some of my favourite illustrations I have yet to create for a board game. Medici will not only be fantastic to play, but also I hope, a treat to behold.”
In Medici, players take on the role of merchants during the profitable age of the Medici family. Players, in turn, reveal lots of valuable trade goods for auction. After a once-around bidding process, players fill their boats with these goods. At the end of each round, money is earned for the highest valued ships, as well as for having monopolies in each type of goods. Medici is full of player interaction and boasts an innovative scoring system that has players bidding on goods with their end game points.
Medici is for 2-6 players and takes approximately 60 minutes to play. The game will include: one game board, 36 cards, 36 scoring tokens, 3 day markers, 5 monopoly markers, 6 ship player mats, and 2 ship player mats to be used in the 2-player game.
